Red Flags to Watch Out for When Hiring an Electrician or Plumber in Ghana
Avoid fake artisans, unsafe wiring and inflated bills. These are the warning signs to spot before you hire an electrician or plumber in Ghana, and what a trustworthy professional does instead.

Why vetting matters more than the lowest price
A poor plumbing job can flood a ceiling; a poor electrical job can start a fire. In Ghana, many homeowners still find artisans through a friend of a friend or a roadside number, which works sometimes but leaves you with little recourse when things go wrong. Knowing the warning signs before you hire saves money, time and, with electrical work, potentially lives.
Red flag 1: No verifiable identity or business address
If an artisan will not share a full name, a Ghana Card or a place of business, think twice. A professional who plans to stay in business is happy to be identified. On ProArtisan Hub, providers must submit National ID, a live face capture and a business address before their listing goes public.
Red flag 2: An electrician who cannot show certification
In Ghana, electrical wiring professionals are certified by the Energy Commission. For new wiring, rewiring, meter connections or distribution board work, ask to see the certificate and confirm it. Unqualified wiring can also cause problems when you deal with ECG for a new or upgraded connection.
Red flag 3: Big cash advances and pressure to decide now
Be wary of anyone who demands most of the money upfront, insists on cash only, or says the price will double if you do not pay today. A reasonable artisan may ask for materials money, but it should be tied to a written list you can check against receipts and deliveries.
Red flag 4: Vague quotes and 'we will see' pricing
A quote that says only 'plumbing work, GHS X' gives you nothing to hold on to. Ask for labour and materials to be listed separately, with brands and quantities. If the scope changes on site, the new price should be agreed before work continues, not announced at the end. See our Accra plumbing services cost guide to understand how fair quotes are built.
Red flag 5: Unsafe shortcuts on site
Watch for electricians who skip earthing, twist wires together without proper connectors, use undersized cable or bypass breakers. For plumbers, warning signs include joining pipes without the right fittings, no pressure test after installation, or leaving drainage without the correct fall. If you see these, stop the work and get a second opinion.
Standard materials matter too. Ask for products that meet Ghana Standards Authority requirements rather than cheap, unbranded cables and fittings.
Red flag 6: No reviews, no photos of past work
Genuine artisans have a track record. Ask for photos of recent jobs and phone numbers of past clients, and read published reviews where available. Be cautious of glowing testimonials that cannot be traced to a real customer.
If you are overcharged or receive faulty goods, the Ministry of Trade and Industry consumer-protection resources explain your options. For electricity safety and reporting dangerous connections, contact ECG directly.
What a trustworthy electrician or plumber does instead
They identify themselves, inspect before quoting, explain the problem in plain language, put the price in writing, use quality materials, clean up and test the work with you before asking for final payment.
